The days when environmental litigation groups like Earthjustice and Farmworker Justice had friendly voices in EPA and the White House seem like two years in the past. Because they are two years in the past. Where once environmental groups could write entire documents for the White House to repost in the name of the U.S., now they cry foul if organizations like Heartland even have email exchanges with EPA.

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons – Chinese Epidemiologists Declare Your Barbecue Will Kill You

The American Chemical Society is a not-for-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress. That doesn't keep their editors from lobbying against science and common sense, like when a team of authors in Environmental Science&Technology, funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, are allowed to terrify Americans by scaremongering the American barbecue grill the weekend before Memorial Day.

3 Recommendations For Elisabete Weiderpass, The New IARC Director

Posted by on May 17, 2018 in Public Health | Comments Off on 3 Recommendations For Elisabete Weiderpass, The New IARC Director

To the relief of the real science community everywhere, the era of Chris Wild is almost over at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). That means maybe they can get back to finding carcinogens rather than manufacturing them.

Or not. The concern about Dr. Elisabete Weiderpass was never about credentials, all of the short-listed candidates have excellent credentials except Dr. Chris Portier, who is clearly too unethical. The concern was instead about perception. Being married to Harri Vainio, clearly a huge part of the credibility problem IARC has, means she will be dismissed as a poitical choice. That is a deep hole.

Finally, EPA Is Ending Regulation By ‘Secret Sauce’ – And Activists Are Livid

In 1984, activist groups won a stunning victory for political allies they had placed inside the Federal government. Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc., 467 U.S. 837 gave "deference" to agencies when interpreting statutes Congress required them to administer. The White House, regardless of voters or Congress, could legislate using regulations and be judge, jury and executioner when it came to science. Perfect for activism, but terrible for public trust in science.

Cheat Mood: 40% Of The Healthiest Eaters Still Indulge When They Are Down

In the haze of smoke and mirrors about nutrition, it's easy to think that you will lose weight if you eliminate some scary chemicals (Endocrine Disruptors!™) or scary foods (Sugar! Dairy! Meat! High Fructose Corn Syrup! Grain! Gluten!) but the reality is much simpler: You just need fewer calories.

No, really. In 100 percent of studies, people who consumed fewer calories than they burned lost weight. Harvard Food Frequency Questionnaires, with their numerous outcomes and numerous foods, are guaranteed to come up with a food that will cause disease with a .05 p-value. That is how statistics work. It is probably why they chose so many foods for the first one and did even more later.

If Biased Algorithms Are Everywhere, Does That Mean They Are Ineffective?

In 2018, you can guess the politics of many people by which newspapers they read, and you could also do that 100 years ago. Certainly some people, like me, read both the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times but if someone defaults to MSNBC or Fox News, you can estimate their voting record with high levels of accuracy.
