Opening The Refrigerator Door Is Not Making Your Milk Spoil Quicker

Two weeks after people were sickened by E. coli on romaine lettuce, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control told the entire country to throw theirs out, which alarmed people for little reason and cost farmers hundreds of millions of dollars. People shouldn't have been alarmed because most people would have thrown it out anyway. Up to 94 percent of people throw out lots.

And that's not as alarming as media reports are making it sound. We are constantly told to eat less "processed" food and more of the fresh kind, which aside from statistical correlation has never been shown to be valid health advice, and fruits and vegetables that are not "processed" by being canned or frozen are going to rot.

Vaping Replaced Cigarettes, And That Is A Public Health Win

Early this year, I testified at FDA in support of approval for a new smoking cessation tool called iQOS. While it may have seemed odd for the president of the American Council on Science and Health, which has campaigned against smoking for 40 years, to endorse a product made by a tobacco company, the reason was simple data.

Paola Mayfield Bleaching Her Hair While Pregnant Is Perfectly Safe

Posted by on Nov 20, 2018 in Chemistry | Comments Off on Paola Mayfield Bleaching Her Hair While Pregnant Is Perfectly Safe

Mommy shaming and chemophobia have long found common cause when it comes to the cosmetics industry.

Though mercenary, it is understandable why companies that make labels "certifying" something safe, and activists raising money touting our doom, prey on expectant parents; they are easy targets. Being a new parent is scary. Books are basically useless and 'better safe than sorry' is a well-worn cliché.

California Fires: Where There’s Smoke There’s PM 2.5 Junk Science

Posted by on Nov 15, 2018 in Atmospheric | Comments Off on California Fires: Where There’s Smoke There’s PM 2.5 Junk Science

As I write this, our local school is closed due to concern about smoke inhalation. Other parts of the nation may not realize it but two severe wildfires broke out recently, in northern and southern California. If this had happened anywhere near New York City or Washington, D.C. it would be called Smokemageddon, or a Particulate Vortex, or something else clever, but because it's California we won't get Lester Holt in a facemask and 24 hour coverage on CNN.

Why Activists Changed Their Tunes On Dams And Reservoirs

Posted by on Nov 14, 2018 in Environment | Comments Off on Why Activists Changed Their Tunes On Dams And Reservoirs

Dams keep the boom and bust of flooding from being too severe, they prevent water shortages, they make human existence better. But they clearly change nature.

Why is a human building a dam unnatural but a beaver building a dam natural? Only an environmentalist can figure that out, but what was a great idea 10 years ago - hydroelectric power and storing water - is now the enemy of the paid activism community, and politically sympathetic researchers have increasingly begun to curry media attention by writing papers to prove them right, as has happened again in Nature Sustainability, a journal which, like something might be called Nature UFOs, was created to make money legitimizing the beliefs of the activism community inside academia.

RIP Dr. Herb London: A Fine Conservative, A Great Man

RIP Dr. Herb London: A Fine Conservative, A Great Man

In late 2014 I came downstairs from my home office and said to my wife, "Herb London just left me a message."

"Is he any relation to Stacy London?" she asked in her offhand humor way. Well, yeah, she is his daughter, if you are from California, but if you are of my generation and from anywhere near the orbit of New York, you know who Herb London is. And Herb London was getting a return phone call.

Former NRC Head Gregory Jaczko Says Union Of Concerned Scientists Is Wrong On Nuclear

Posted by on Nov 10, 2018 in Energy | Comments Off on Former NRC Head Gregory Jaczko Says Union Of Concerned Scientists Is Wrong On Nuclear

Gregory Jaczko, Ph.D., has a degree in theoretical physics, a hatred for nuclear power, and a love for his former boss Senator Harry Reid of Nevada - which is why Reid lobbied so heavily to get him placed as Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC).

The Chair of the NRC, tasked with managing nuclear energy in America, hated nuclear energy? Yes and he still does, but despite that he got the job because, well, that's politics. President George W. Bush was a dealmaker and Senator Harry Reid wanted the Bush administration to ignore two decades of studies showing that America needed one modern nuclear waste storage facility, rather than over 100 that exist now, and the perfect place was under a mountain in Nevada, Reid's state.

Marine Policy Journal Refuses To Retract Article They Must Know Is Bogus

Posted by on Nov 2, 2018 in Oceanography | Comments Off on Marine Policy Journal Refuses To Retract Article They Must Know Is Bogus

If the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), independent scientists, and fisheries experts all know a claim in an article is hopelessly flawed why would the journal Marine Policy dig in their heels, doing irreparable harm to the marine conservation they claim to care about?

When expressing concern about the article, NOAA wrote, "allegations made in the paper, are absent of transparency regarding the data, and assumptions supporting them are irresponsible and call into question the authors' conclusions."

Russian Fifth Columnists Convicted In Finland – Are Those Aiding Activists In The US Next?

Posted by on Oct 21, 2018 in Random Thoughts | Comments Off on Russian Fifth Columnists Convicted In Finland – Are Those Aiding Activists In The US Next?

During the Obama administration, America's Director of National Intelligence exposed Russian efforts to undermine U.S. natural gas ("fracking") by supporting environmental groups using "donor advised" funds (large pools of money where individual participants can anonymously decide where to send the cash) in order to keep Europe, which has thrown the energy baby out with the political water by shutting down nuclear, suckling at the teat of Kremlin fossil fuels. They didn't want America exporting energy, the top export of Russia, and the way to do that was to pay activists to make fracking controversial at home so legislators would come down along predictable party lines.
